I love Dahlias.
I have always loved Dahlia’s. But this huge purple Dahlia really caught my eye. I saw it in the Dahlia fields of Swan Island Dahlia’s one hot summer afternoon. I took a picture of this particular one because of the way the sun was hitting it. So bright on one side and that deep purple, almost black on the other. I loved the contrast and wanted to paint it that very moment. It wasn’t until several years later that I actually did paint it but I never forgot the feeling of that day. The heat. The golden heat of the late afternoon.
